:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from DeathDestroyerOfLawnFurniture -- What is this? A book for ants? : The contents of the book is 5 stars all the way. The information in the book is great. The print could be smaller, but then you'd need a microscope. I've read a lot of mass market paperback books and my eyesight is 20/20 but this has to be the smallest print I've seen besides maybe a pocket Bible. It's almost unreadable in my opinion. If you have any trouble seeing or just hate tiny print like I do, then I'd recommend another version of this in a larger format. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from J.R. Sedivy -- A Solid Introduction to Archetypes and the Unconscious Mind : Man and His Symbols is a collaborative work between legendary psychologist Carl Jung and four of his associates. Within this book his associates seek to step down many of his complex topics so as to be accessible to the reader who is not specialized in psychology, the unconscious mind, and archetypes. This was the final work Carl Jung had undertaken prior to his death. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Bau -- Probably the best place to start to learn about Jung's work : I read a smattering of Jung back in the day (70's-80's) but overlooked this one. It stands on its own and I would say it is a good place to start for the average reader. Not uniformly good - some Jung practitioners are pretty head-bound - but the chapters by Jung and von Franz are really superb. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2017 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dav -- I enjoyed this book somewhat : Most of this book is not Carl Jung. The book has a few parts to it, most of which are written by Jung's apprentices/students. The book (all parts) are interesting and ethereal. Conceptually taxing enough to wear the reader down but short enough to not make it an impossible marathon. I was looking for the collective unconsciousness of man that builds over time. I enjoyed this book somewhat, but not 5 stars for me. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Archimedes -- Great place to start in Jungian psychology : Some of the authors in this book make bold claims without backing them up at all, but overall, Jung and most of his colleagues do a good job at presenting his theories in the simplest terms possible. If the reader is willing to engage with the work with a critical yet open mind, then they will likely find something illuminating within. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. J. Graham -- A treasure : Very pleased to have this gently used edition. This was written near the end of his life and I believe his only effort to address to laymen his most significant concepts regarding symbols. Only the first chapter is written by him, the rest was left in the hands of his trusted disciples following his outline for the scope of the book. It is a rather dense read, but well worth the time and effort. I had heard of this several years ago, but never found it in any book store, not even used book stores so I'm delighted to finally have a copy! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Crow-Conspirator -- Would have Preferred to have More Jung : The book gets things off to a great start by Jung. Then it’s so long Carl! Then there’s a symposium with various academics. I would have thought that Jung would have wanted his views presented to common people by himself. That, as I understand it, was his goal. It’s a good read, but uneven (the part about art was particularly bad). The monograph Sychronicity is, in my opinion, more interesting. Even so, I gave it three stars. There is a lot to get wrong in Jung’s vision. While I might wish for the master himself to introduce me to the essence of his theories, Man and His Symbols is not a bad effort. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from RJ -- Interesting : I have been a follower of Freud all my life (now 69 years old) and consider myself to be very knowledgable in psychology of the personality. This book by one of Freud's first followers (later to brake off to form his own school) has opened some door's I did not know existed. Having said that, Jung's "collective unconsciousness" is some what simimlar to Freud;s "super ego". Jung;s attention to ancient symbolism in dreams is very interesting and instructive if your dreams are not "lucid reality" dreams (based on reality rather than fantasy, monster's, castle's, flying in the clouds etc.) ( Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Dave -- Classic book- presented poorly. : I can’t explain how influential and essential this book is for those who enjoy Jung or want a slightly more casual introduction to the great genius’ work. However this edition is not great. On Amazon the only edition available is this strangely antiquated library bound edition which is poorly printed, too small and quite uncomfortable to read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Muthuvel Deivendran -- Highly recommended for life : There's this famous Buddhist parable that I'm often reminded from a book that I'd read few years ago. A Surgeon rushes to begin the work of saving the life of a man who got struck in the chest with a poison arrow but the man resists. He first wants to know the name of the fletcher who fashioned the arrow’s shaft, genus of the wood from which it was cut, name of the horse upon which he rode, and a thousand others that have no bearing upon his present suffering or his ultimate survival. The man needs to get his priorities straight that his commitment to thinking about the world results from a basic misunderstanding of his predicament. ( Reviewed in India on October 25, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janet Pascoe -- A brilliant book : I am studying counselling and enjoy reading material beyond the standard book list. My teacher mentioned this one once in class so I jotted down the title and ordered it initially from the library. A popular book, so it had to go back after a few weeks for someone else. I did not have opportunity to complete the book, but was so impressed with what I had read that I decided to go for an amazon purchase and have not been disappointed. A good investment. However I do recommend the version that I bought if you are keen on the visuals because the book is focussed on symbolism the pictures and size/detail add a valued dimension. You can buy other versions for less money and the text is impressive however I am glad I went for the version with clear colour images. A classic book whether you are studying or if you want to find out more on symbolism. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bill Leacy -- Enlightening, revealing and and excellent read. : Being a novice in terms of reading psychology I was pleasantly surprised that this book was both enlightening and enjoyable to to read. Jung gives many practical examples of the pervasiveness of psychology and its physical manifestations. It changed the way I perceived life and my inner self. This is definitely a "must read" book and most likely will leave any newcomers to young wanting to read more. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 21, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jad Berrington -- Jung on symbols and dreams : A bit dense in parts but full of gems and a connection with some of the last writings of Jung ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 24, 2018 )
